Business Name: MakMax Australia

Project Title: Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre

Name Of Fabric: Hiraoka 212T2 and Hiraoka 212T2 SA Supplier: Hiraoka

Project Description: Two PVC fabrics, each with a different translucency, were used to achieve a pattern effect for a 1,291 square metre roofing structure over a shopping centre precinct.

What is the purpose of this project? The purpose of this project was to replace the existing membrane structure with a more functional, aesthetic structure, enabling more efficient use of the precinct. The client requested a custom designed structure that seals an area of the shopping precinct from rain while using a combination of fabrics to create a specific pattern in order to increase the natural light in the area. They also requested that it feature with a customised programmable LED lighting system.

What is unique or complex about this project? There is a unique combination of fabric types that were used to create a flowing patterned theme and one of the fabric types has a higher translucency increasing the natural light into the area. Installation of these structures was particularly difficult as the area needed to remain open during business hours and the hotels nearby reduced our ability to install at night.

Was there anything different or special about this project? In order to overcome the challenges of the project, load rated gantries/hoarding was installed around all the tenancies which enabled them to maintain day to day operations. Seeing that the whole area is a suspended slab and the light rail runs past all entries to the area, steel delivery times and locations were very specific and heavily monitored with regards to traffic control. Due to the load restrictions, installation was carried out using a small crawler crane and boom lifts. This was particularly difficult as we were close to the limits of the cranes’ capabilities and by the time the steel, crane, boom lifts and personnel were mobilised, the work area became very congested. Despite these challenges however, through effective and careful management of both off site and on site works, the work was carried out successfully and the project was completed on time.

What were the results of the project? The roofing structure was completed on time and within budget to the delight of the client. The desired pattern effect was achieved and together with the LED lighting effects, has impressed the shopping centre's tenants and customers. Overall, it is a great looking, functional structure that met the clients needs and is considered a great feature that draws customers into their centre.

How did you contribute to the project: The project manager worked tirelessly to ensure the successful completion of the project. There were many challenges/hurdles to overcome and they effectively problem solved and managed the site in order to run on time and within budget. The engineering as well as the project managers' dedication and talent is impressive as is evident by the structure.
