Project Description: Spray dodger including external handrail, opening front window and easily removable zip installation.

Bimini including 32mm tube, zip installation and LED lights.

Link Sheet (between dodger and bimini) including fibreglass batten with external attachment point to boom.

Side and After cockpit clears in separate removable panels, individual roll up and custom stowage bags.

What is the purpose of this project? This boat was purchased by a Chinese multinational company at the preceding Sydney international Boat Show.

The brief was to provide a system of covers that could totally enclose the cockpit of the boat for entertaining international guests in comfort while being easily removable enabling the boat to sailed around the harbour.

What is unique or complex about this project? The complexity of this lay firstly in its sheer size.

The spray dodger was a larger version of our normal product with the exception of each frame tapering smaller from back to front, the front frame is 300mm narrower than the aft frame. This helped to reduce the size of the span therefore allowing us to create more tension on the canvas.

The bimini measures 4.5mts across and 3mts fore/aft which challenged the strength of the canvas and its ability to hold tension at maximum span. To achieve this, after tying the frame into position with rope we then created spring in the centre of the 32mm frame by using a block and tackle to pull the frames together in 2 places either side off the centre.

The link sheet also spans 2.5mts so we added a fibreglass batten to help support the centre. This hooked up to the end of the boom.

The cockpit clears required an enormous amount of planing to ensure simplicity of function for the client, and ease of manufacture for us.

Was there anything different or special about this project? The client requested some type of lighting as the area was so large with no overhead lights. With some R&D we were able to sew a clear window into the pocket of the bimini and install an LED strip light. This provided more than enough light for the whole cockpit.

What were the results of the project? The brief was fulfilled without exception and the opportunities for using lighting have enabled us to progress the idea and apply it to other projects in other forms.

It was also a good opportunity to push the limits of our fabrics and framework.
